Owen has appeared in the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal as well as in various specialist jurisdictions. Recent / notable experience includes:

  • Defending an application for default judgment in the High Court

  • Acting for two Credit Suisse defendants in the Feltex litigation, a significant class action alleging breaches of the Securities Act and Fair Trading Act and seeking damages of $200 m (High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court)

  • Advising various clients regarding litigation funding arrangements

  • Acting for an international financial institution to protest the jurisdiction of the New Zealand Courts to hear various equitable claims

  • Defending a multinational and its New Zealand subsidiary against a multi million dollar contract claim in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court

  • Acting for an overseas company in relation to a multi million dollar debt recovery in the High Court

  • Acting for a courier services provider in relation to claims in contract and pursuant to the Carriage of Goods Act in relation to a classic racing vehicle

  • Acting for private clients in relation to claims pursuant to the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990

  • Acting for an oil and gas client in the Court of Appeal to litigate contract, Commerce Act and Crown Minerals Act claims over a gas / condensate field

  • Acting for a transport client to defend charges under the Health and Safety in Employment Act concerning people being trapped by bus doors
